EMA

EMA gives you up to £30 cash each week to carry on learning.

What is EMA?
EMA is cash in your hands to help you carry on learning.   If you’re 16, 17 or 18 and have left, or are about to leave, compulsory education, then it could be for you.

Your household income
To qualify for EMA in the academic year starting in September 2008 your annual household income must be below £30,810 (for tax year 2007/2008).   And there’s good news if you have a part-time job – any money you earn isn’t included in your overall household income.

Apply for EMA by phone
To apply by phone, call 0800 121 8989.   EMA helpline staff will talk you through your application.

Apply for EMA on paper
To get an EMA application form, either:

  • ask Miss Pender or Mrs Flowers in the Sixth Form, or
  • contact your Connexions personal adviser.

Completing parent or carer details
Once you’ve completed the EMA application form, your parent or carer will also need to send evidence of the household income for the relevant tax year.   This might be their Tax Credit Award Notice (TC602), or P60.

Get a bank account
To get EMA, you’ll need a bank or building society account and the evidence to prove it (for example, an account statement or payment book).    If you haven’t opened a bank account yet, EMA is a good reason to get one.
